Tempus fugit es de lo poco que recuerdo de las clases de latín del instituto. Y lo cierto es que nos hemos hecho mayores, demasiado rápido. Justo ayer recibí un mensaje de un amigo de esa época, con el que hacía años que no me veía, y me dio por hacer una videollamada con él… estuvimos casi dos horas al teléfono. En una de sus reflexiones, me decía que hemos tenido la suerte de no haber presenciado grandes desgracias en nuestro círculo de amigos del instituto, como pueden ser accidentes de tráfico o fatalidades de ese tipo. Y no le falta razón, pese a haber tenido compañeros que juguetearon con las drogas y que, afortunadamente, supieron dejarlas atrás.
Antonio Vega no tuvo esa suerte -aunque fue un cáncer de pulmón el que acabó con su vida- pero nos dejó para la posteridad una serie de bellas canciones, algunas de ellas auténticos himnos generacionales. En el vídeo que acompaña la entrada de hoy, le veréis introduciendo este “Elixir de Juventud” como “una canción bonita con la que quiero que todos bebáis conmigo ese elixir de juventud y que el paso de los años no sea sino la confirmación de nuestro espíritu joven y nuestras ganas de vivir”. No lo podría definir mejor.
Las canciones de Antonio Vega son como poemas, cargadas de metáforas, de esas que llegan hondo y que, en el momento que las haces tuyas, son para siempre. Pese a la fragilidad física que mostró en alguna época tenía una fuerte conexión con el público, que le respetaba escuchando atentamente su suave voz y su maestría con la guitarra.
Estas semanas tengo a un buen amigo pasando los días en el hospital cuidando de su mujer tras una complicada operación. Quería hacer esta entrada en el blog pensando especialmente en ellos. Aunque hablamos casi a diario, me gustaría poder estar allí haciéndole compañía. Me siento en gran parte el elixir de juventud que les “puso de la mano desde el primer día”. Pese a estos momentos difíciles, mi amigo ha sabido tener la madurez necesaria de mantener ese espíritu joven y las ganas de vivir que recomendaba Antonio Vega y que le serán de gran ayuda en la recuperación de su mujer, su niña, su chica, que le vuelva a traer el levante y el sol y, como un espejo, reflejar su brillo y color. En mi blog suena algo cursi, en su canción es una maravilla.
Elixir de Juvemtud
Tempus fugit is one of the few things I remember from high school Latin classes. And I have to admit we have grown older, too fast. Just yesterday I received a message from a friend of that time, whom I hadn’t seen in years, and I decided to make a video call with him… we spent almost two hours on the phone. In one of his reflections, he told me that we have been lucky not to have witnessed major misfortunes in our circle of high school friends, such as traffic accidents or fatalities of that type. And he is right, despite having had companions who dabbled with drugs and who, fortunately, knew how to leave them behind.
Antonio Vega was not that lucky – although it was lung cancer that ended his life – but he left us for posterity a series of beautiful songs, some of them authentic generational anthems. In the video that accompanies today’s entry, you will see him introducing this “Elixir de Juventud” as “a beautiful song with which I want you all to drink with me that elixir of youth and that the passing of the years is nothing more than the confirmation of our young spirit and our desire to live.” He couldn’t define it better.

I have a good friend spending these days -maybe weeks- in the hospital taking care of his wife after a complicated operation. I wanted to make this blog post thinking especially about them. Although we talk almost daily, I wish I could be there suuporting him. I feel very much like the elixir of youth that “united their hands in from day one.” Despite these difficult moments, my friend learned how to have the necessary maturity to maintain that young spirit and the desire to live that Antonio Vega recommended and that will be of great help in the recovery of his wife, his girl, who bring back the east and the sun and, like a mirror, reflect its brightness and color. On my blog it sounds a little cheesy, in his song it’s just wonderful.
