De la misma manera que “Cuéntame” podría ser el equivalente español a “The Wonder Years”, a veces pienso que Miguel Bosé se llegó a inspirar en David Bowie https://www.davidbowie.com/home. Lo digo por el aspecto de ambos en diferentes etapas, no por la música. En eso, era único e inigualable como otros grandes artistas. Me apunto como tarea pendiente ver algún documental sobre él, es un personaje interesante.

No ha sido “Cuéntame” ni Miguel Bosé quienes me han traído hoy hasta David Bowie y Starman. Fue el hecho de mencionar ayer a Ringo Starr, considerado uno de los 100 mejores baterías de la historia por la revista Rolling Stone. Podía haber mencionado a cualquier otro de los 99 restantes, pero he querido encontrar en esa lista a Michael “Woody” Woodmansey https://web.archive.org/web/20160131030918/http://www.woodywoodmansey.co.uk/, el que fuera batería de Bowie en el álbum “The Rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” y en otros álbumes. Siempre que escucho la canción “The Man Who Sold the World” pienso que hace un gran trabajo, aunque lo digo desde la simple opinión de alguien que disfruta escuchando buena música y poco más.

Según cuentan, la canción -una de las más conocidas de Bowie- narra como un extraterrestre contacta con los jóvenes a través de la radio para lanzarles un mensaje de esperanza. Esto me recuerda lo que muchas veces pienso, que cada uno hacemos nuestras las canciones en función de la interpretación de la letra y del momento que estemos viviendo. Seguramente, siendo una de las canciones y de los álbumes más destacados e Influyentes de la historia del rock, haya otro tipo de interpretaciones.

Starman

The same way that “Cuéntame” could be the Spanish equivalent of “The Wonder Years”, sometimes I think that Spanish singer Miguel Bosé inspired in David Bowie https://www.davidbowie.com/home. I think so because of the appearance of both in different stages, not because of the music. Regarding music, Bowie was unique and peerless as other great artists. Watching a documentary about him is one of my pending tasks, he is an interesting character.

It was not “Cuéntame” or Miguel Bosé who brought me to David Bowie and Starman today. It was the fact of mentioning Ringo Starr yesterday, included by Rolling Stone magazine on the list of the 100 greatest drummers in history. I could have mentioned any of the remaining 99, but I wanted to find on that list Michael “Woody” Woodmansey https://web.archive.org/web/20160131030918/http://www.woodywoodmansey.co.uk/, the drummer for Bowie on the album “The Rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” and some other albums. Every time I listen to the song «The Man Who Sold the World» I think he did a great job, although I say it just with the view of someone who enjoys listening to good music.

The song – one of Bowie’s best known – narrates how an alien contacts the young people sending them a message of hope on the radio. This reminds me of what I often think, each one of us take the songs for our lives according to the interpretation of the lyrics and the moment we are living. Surely, being one of the most outstanding and influential songs and albums in rock history, there are other interpretations.

With a Little Help from My Friends

Aquellos maravillosos años, de eso hablaba ayer y así se llamaba una serie (The Wonder Years) que nos tuvo enganchados a la televisión durante un tiempo. En la actualidad, la serie Cuéntame viene a ser algo parecido. Qué casualidad, ayer hablaba de la Alcántara Foundation Family https://alcantarafoundation.com/ y hoy menciono a otra familia Alcántara.

La serie recordaba parte de la historia de los EEUU de finales de la década de los 60 y principios de los 70 a través del personaje principal que, a su vez, hacia su recorrido por otros conflictos sociales, familiares e incluso amorosos. Esos acontecimientos eran narrados por el mismo personaje en su versión adulta, quien había sacado sus propias conclusiones después de unos años. Aunque hoy en día hay muchas opciones de series y películas, si no la visteis en su momento y la podéis recuperar, os recomiendo que le deis una oportunidad.

La banda sonora de “Aquellos Maravillosos Años“ era excepcional, no podía ser de otra manera con la cantidad de destacados grupos musicales que había en esa época. La canción que nos ocupa hoy era original de The Beatles y de las pocas que cantaba Ringo Starr, pero tan sólo un año después Joe Cocker http://www.cocker.com/, aún con más pelo que barba, hizo esta versión memorable y la usaron para la apertura de la serie.

La letra de la canción puede resultar muy inspiradora si tenemos algún momento débil y si no profundizamos demasiado en ella, pues en una frase habla de algo a lo que ni los amigos ni nadie debería ayudar. Los más pícaros, también pueden encontrar otro verso que incluye una broma más ocurrente.

En fin, que entre canción y canción más de uno hacía los “viajes” sin necesidad de subir a la cama y decir las palabras mágicas. Yo a lo mío… cama voladora, vuela un poco, por favor.

With a Little Help from My Friends

The Wonder Years, that’s what I was talking about yesterday and that was the name of a television series that had us hooked on to the television for a while. A Spanish tv series called ”Cuéntame” is something similar. What a coincidence, I was talking yesterday about the Alcántara Foundation Family https://alcantarafoundation.com/en/home/ and today I mention another Alcántara family (the one in “Cuéntame”).

This comedy-drama recalled part of the United States’ history of the late 1960s and early 1970s through the main character who also made his way through other social, family and even love conflicts. Those events were narrated by the same character in his adult version, who had drawn his own conclusions after a few years. Although there are many options for watching series and movies nowadays, if you did not know about that one I suggest you give it a chance and try to get it.

The soundtrack of “The Wonder Years” was exceptional, it could not be otherwise with the number of outstanding musical groups that were at that time. The show’s theme song is the one I will talk about today. The original “With a Little Help Form My Fiends” song was from The Beatles and was one of the few that Ringo Starr sang, but just a year later Joe Cocker http://www.cocker.com/, with more hair than beard, made this memorable version.

The lyrics of the song can be very inspiring if we have a weak moment and if we do not try to understand some of the sentences. In one of them they mention something that neither friends nor anyone should help on getting. The roguish ones may also find another verse that includes a wittier joke.

It looks like some musicians were doing kind of «trips» between songs without having to go to bed and say the magic words. I do my thing … flying bed, fly a little, please.\

All Together Now

Ayer me escribió una amiga de la infancia para decirme que le había gustado la elección de Side, de Travis. Recuerdo que en el colegio ya compartíamos música, y he pensado que la canción de hoy también la recordará ella y varios compañeros de clase de aquella época.

La educación primaria de esos años se llamaba EGB -Educación General Básica-. Mi hermano siempre me ha parecido muy culto y debe pensar que la mía fue muy básica… En realidad, después supe que también se la conocía por GGB -fonéticamente ”jejebé”- por eso de que estábamos de cachondeo demasiado a menudo. Entre los apodos -Peri, Menkio, Reme, Ele…-, las trastadas en clase, los partidos en el patio, las triquiñuelas en el comedor, etc, etc., se nos hizo muy corto. Eso sí, éramos una piña.

Me gustó que en la clase de mi hijo también les inculcaban ese sentimiento grupal, de respeto y de ayuda. Y estos días está saliendo a relucir con fuerza todo eso. Así mismo, la canción esta inspirada en la Tregua de Navidad, un breve alto el fuego no oficial entre las tropas alemanas y las del Imperio británico durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, en la Navidad del 1914. Lo he leído ahora, no recuerdo haberlo aprendido durante la GGB.

Un día, en un descanso entre clases más largo de lo habitual, mis compañeros de curso me pidieron que les enseñara a hacer un avión de papel. Les salió perfecto, llegaron casi todos sus aviones hasta el patio que se veía desde la ventana de la clase, la misma que el profesor tenía detrás de su asiento y desde el cual pudo ver “nuestra obra”. Preguntó quién fue el artista, me señalaron y acabé recogiéndolos todos. No me perdí ahí la clase de historia de la Primera Guerra Mundial porque fue con el profesor de matemáticas.

La canción original de The Farm se ha usado en varias ocasiones como himno, especialmente en eventos futbolísticos. El videoclip es algo antiguo y no muy entretenido, para las audiencias infantiles y futboleras añadiré a mitad del texto en inglés la versión que se hizo con motivo del Mundial de fútbol de la FIFA del 2006. Al final del texto en inglés también encontraréis la versión del videoclip para EEUU. Si vais a ver solamente uno ese me parece el más divertido de los 3.

No es casualidad que canciones así se usen para eso. Los valores de pertenencia al grupo, de respeto, de esfuerzo, de compañerismo y un largo etcétera, van estrechamente ligados al mundo del deporte. Buen ejemplo de ello lo dan muchos deportistas. Hoy me ha alegrado ver al futbolista del FC Barcelona Sergio Busquets en una acción con la Alcántara Family Foundation https://alcantarafoundation.com/ y UNICEF https://www.unicef.org/es. Lo ha hecho muy bien, tenemos que poner en valor el esfuerzo que hacen poniéndose ante una cámara para hacer algo a lo que no están tan habituados.

All Together Now

I got a message from a former schoolmate telling me that she was happy to see Travis’ song Side on yesterday’s post. We already shared music at the primary school, so I thought that today’s song will also be remembered by her and several classmates from that time.

Primary education of that time was known as EGB – General Basic Education. My brother has always seemed a learned man to me, he probably thinks that my “General Education“ was too ”Basic”… Actually, later on I learned that EGB was also known as GGB – phonetically «hehehe» – maybe because we were messing around too often. I liked that in my son’s class they also instilled that group feeling of respect and help. And these days all that is gaining strength. One day, during a longer than usual break between lessons, my classmates asked me to teach them how to make a paper plane. They did perfect, almost all their planes came on to the playground that we could see from the window, the same window that the teacher had behind his seat and from which he could see “our masterpiece”. He asked who the artist was, they pointed me out and I ended up collecting them all. I didn’t miss there the lesson about World War I because it happened with the math teacher.

The Farm’s original song has been used many times as an anthem, especially at soccer events. The video clip is a bit old and not very entertaining, for children and soccer audiences I am adding the version that was made on the occasion of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. It’s not a coincidence that songs like that are used for sports events. The values of group membership, respect, effort, companionship and a long etcetera are closely linked to sports. A good example of this is given by many athletes. De momento no me limito a subir un enlace de un vídeo de Youtube y que lo mire quien quiera. Podría hacer un listado de canciones por orden alfabético o cronológico y no complicarlo más. En cambio, prefiero buscar algo con qué introducir cada canción y luego que cada uno decida si quiere ver el videoclip que dejo al final de cada entrada del blog. Yo siempre os recomiendo que lo hagáis y, a poder ser, con el volumen bien fuerte. Pero es solamente una recomendación. Como decía un profesor de literatura catalana que tuve en el bachillerato “si queréis obligar, dejadles libres”.

La libertad es algo que debe ser difícil de gestionar con los hijos, y más cuando ves las noticias. Hoy he elegido esta canción por algo que me comentaban estos días y que hizo que me viniera a la mente por una de sus estrofas:

La Passion

Con este videoclip de Gigi D’Agostino https://www.gigidagostino.com/ en esta entrada de hoy no nos pondremos sentimentales. Ayer dije algo de perseguir sueños. Esta mañana me ha escrito un amigo alegrándose de haber leído el blog y reconociendo que le ha servido para retomar el suyo. También me ha servido de inspiración a mí su mensaje. Él suele decir que la pasión es el motor de su trabajo, y la verdad es que es un buen trabajador.

Cuando di con este Single -“sencillo” si no queremos abusar de anglicismos-, descubrí una sentencia en su interior que decía: “Según los expertos en aeronáutica, el abejorro no puede volar, por su peso, forma y el tamaño de sus alas. Pero eso el abejorro no lo sabe y, por eso, sigue volando”. Este ejemplo del abejorro es el que muchos de nosotros aplicamos para conseguir lo que nos proponemos y la pasión es determinante para lograrlo. Conquistar un amor, tener éxito en el trabajo, disfrutar de la naturaleza, ganar un trofeo…

Al parecer, la ciencia ya ha desmontado ese tipo de proverbio y afirma que el abejorro tiene una forma de mover las alas que sí le permite volar. Pero quedémonos con lo que podemos aprender de eso.

Quien me sorprendió hace unos años con su pasión, en este caso por conocer todo sobre los animales, fue el hijo de un buen amigo. Lo que para mí era un cocodrilo, resultaba ser un aligator según me hizo entender con apenas 8 años. A menudo le digo a mi hijo que aprenda mucho para que los niños que ahora van al colegio consigan hacer un mundo mejor. Gracias a amigos como este, realmente lo es. Y, casualidades de la vida, también es amigo del apasionado trabajador del inicio de esta entrada.

La Passion

Going Home: Theme of the Local Hero

Un sábado cualquiera acompañé a mis padres a comprar a un gran supermercado. Supongo que no solía pedir cosas constantemente. Aquel día mi madre accedió a comprarme un CD de música y los dos aún nos acordamos de eso, aunque supongo que yo con más detalle sobre cuál se trataba. Ahora mismo no sabría decir por qué elegí ese álbum en concreto, eso no lo recuerdo, pero fue una gran elección. Tampoco recuerdo bien qué edad tenía, por la fecha de salida del álbum recopilatorio -Screenplaying-, en 1993, no menos de 15 años.

Sí sé porqué he elegido esta canción hoy, me lo pedía el cuerpo. En otras ocasiones, viviendo en otros países, la he escuchado bien fuerte en el coche imaginando el momento de volver a casa. Sería por eso de “Going Home“, quizá también por el sentimiento casi heroico de haber sido fuerte en la soledad, de perseguir sueños, de conseguir algo mejor para los míos y, sobre todo, por la intensidad que tiene la canción.

Hoy me ha apetecido compartir esta canción por todos los pequeños héroes. Especialmente los del sector sanitario. Todos tenemos familiares y amigos que están haciendo un gran esfuerzo estos días, algunos incluso dejando de estar con sus familias por cuidar de otros y exponiendo su salud por la de los demás.

Pero también quiero escucharla por muchos otros héroes. Los que están viviendo estos días en soledad, bien por no fomentar más contagios o bien porque ni siquiera pueden volver a casa. Los mayores que, con la paciencia aprendida durante tantos años, esperan el día que puedan volver a abrazarse con sus hijos y sus nietos. Los niños que tienen que entender ahora cosas que ni los adultos comprendemos. Y los que cuidan de ellos, de que no les falte comida, aprendizaje, alegría y muchas otras cosas.

Empecé este blog diciendo que no tengo la inventiva de mi padre para contar cuentos, pero a menudo he usado a esos pequeños héroes para improvisar alguno. Y mi mujer también. Cuentos de cocineros, profesores, conductores de autobús…

Estos días, según iba publicando, comentaba cosas que no tenían mucho que ver con las canciones en sí pero que me habían llevado a ellas de una manera u otra. Hoy no. Hoy es solamente para Mark Knopfler https://www.markknopfler.com/ y todos los héroes en los que queramos pensar. Para mí, los músicos también lo son. De hecho, hoy he puesto dos vídeos diferentes de la misma canción, el oficial y uno en directo donde miles de personas son felices gracias a los músicos y ellos lo son al ver lo que han conseguido. Ya hice referencia a ese sentimiento en la Introducción del blog cuando mencioné las palabras de Brian Wilson.

Cama voladora, vuela un poco, por favor. Y si os lleva por el supermercado, comprad también música para vuestros hijos… y algún cuento.

Going Home: Theme of the Local Hero

On a Saturday afternoon, I went with my parents to do some shopping at a large supermarket. I guess I didn’t used to constantly ask them to buy me anything. That day my mother agreed to buy me a music CD and we both still remember about that day, although I guess I look back on it with more details of the music album. I could not say right now why I chose that album, I do not remember, but it was a great choice. Nor do I remember how old I was, due to the release date of the compilation album -Screenplaying-, in 1993, not less than 15 years old.

I do know why I am choosing this song today, somehow I needed to do it. On other occasions, living in other countries, I was playing this song really loud while driving my car, visualizing myself when arriving back home. It would probably be because of the “Going Home“ words, perhaps also for the almost heroic feeling of having been strong being alone, of pursuing dreams, of achieving something better for my relatives and, above all, for the intensity of the song.

Today I wanted to share this song with you for all the little heroes. Especially those in the health care sector. We all have family and friends who are making a great effort these days, some of them leaving their own family to take care of others and exposing their health in order to look after fellow human beings’ health.

But I also want to listen to it for many other heroes. Those who are living these days alone, either because they do not want to spread the infection or because they cannot even return home. The elderly who wait for the day that they can hug again their children and grandchildren with the patience gained during many years. The children who now have to understand things that even adults do not understand. And those who take care of them, making sure they do not lack food, learning, joy and many other things.

I started this blog saying that I don’t have the creativity that my father had for storytelling, but I was often inspired by those little heroes to improvise some tales. And the same is my wife doing. Tales of chefs, teachers, bus drivers…

These days, as I was publishing, I commented on things that did not have much to do with the songs themselves but that had led me to them in one way or another. Not today. Today’s page is only for Mark Knopfler https://www.markknopfler.com/ and all the heroes we want to think about. Musicians are also heroes to me. In fact, today I have posted two different videos of the same song, the official one and a live one where thousands of people are happy thanks to the musicians and the band are happy too when they can see what they have achieved. I already referred to that feeling in the blog’s Introduction when I mentioned Brian Wilson’s words.

Todos, todos los días del Nike Camp tuve esta canción en la cabeza después de haber asistido a ”Rebel”, el espectáculo que el Cirque Du Soleil tiene en Andorra. Every day during the Nike Camp I had this song in my head after having attended “Rebel”, the show that Cirque Du Soleil has in Andorra. Someone was doing stunts with a giant hoop while they played a version of this song. After few months I was able to guess who was playing the original song, Stromae http://mosaert.com/projects/stromae.

When I downloaded it on my Apple Music charts and played it on to the car radio, my son asked for it on every trip, several times, and my daughter too.

I thought about this song again today because I saw on the news that Cirque Du Soleil has created CirqueConnect https://www.cirquedusoleil.com/cirqueconnect, a web space where they will share their shows for free, offer virtual reality experiences and tutorials with their artists.

Talking about circus, let’s talk about Pallassos Sense Fronteres. They are always there to make children laugh in difficult times, and this is one of them. El tempo… y el tiempo. Muchas veces hemos oído decir que nos gustaría volver atrás en el tiempo para hacer algunas cosas de forma diferente, y ahora estamos esperando que pase la dichosa pandemia, que nos podamos transportar unos meses más allá. Como aconseja mi amigo Llorenç Gómez, intentemos disfrutar de cada momento y de las pequeñas cosas.
